The Wisdom of Tolstoy

A young man once asked an old teacher what makes a person truly wise.

The teacher smiled and said, “Wisdom isn’t simply knowing many things. It’s knowing how to live.”

He then shared several lessons inspired by the writings of Leo Tolstoy.

The first lesson was simple: before trying to change the world, begin by improving yourself.

The second was about kindness. A small act of compassion can sometimes have a greater impact than a grand achievement.

The third reminded him that happiness doesn’t come from having everything we want. It comes from appreciating what we already have.

The young man asked, “So what is the most important lesson?”

The teacher replied,

“Live honestly, love sincerely, forgive when you can, and remember that every day gives you another opportunity to become a better person.”

The young man thanked him.

As he walked home, he realized that wisdom isn’t found only in books.

It is found in the way we treat people, the choices we make, and the lessons we learn from our own lives.

Sometimes, the simplest advice is the hardest to follow—but also the most valuable.
