The Rooster’s Last Chance

Fred was in the fertilized egg business.

He had several hundred young pullets and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs.

He kept careful records, and any rooster that wasn’t performing well eventually ended up in the soup pot.

One morning, Fred noticed that one particular rooster wasn’t producing very well.

He decided to give him one final chance.

Fred watched carefully as the rooster walked confidently into the henhouse.

Within minutes, the rooster had visited several hens.

Fred was impressed.

But then the rooster suddenly ran outside, chased a few birds, and started running around the farm.

Fred watched in amazement.

The rooster continued all day, running from one henhouse to another.

Finally, the exhausted rooster collapsed in the grass.

Fred rushed over.

“You did a great job today!” he said.

The rooster slowly opened one eye.

“Just five more minutes,” he whispered.

Fred looked confused.

“Why?”

The rooster pointed toward the sky.

“I’m trying to catch that chicken up there!”

Fred immediately realized the rooster had completely lost his mind.

He picked him up and carried him back to the henhouse.

The rooster looked at Fred and sighed.

“I knew I should have taken that promotion to soup.”
