A first-grade teacher noticed that one of her students was having trouble settling into class.
One morning, she asked him, “Harry, what’s your problem?”
Harry proudly replied, “I’m too smart for first grade! My sister is in third grade, and I know everything she knows.”
The teacher raised an eyebrow.
“Oh really? Then perhaps you should take a test.”
Harry confidently agreed.
The teacher asked him a few simple questions.
He answered every one correctly.
She was impressed.
“Harry, you really are quite clever. Perhaps you should move up a grade.”
Harry smiled proudly.
Then the principal came into the classroom.
The teacher explained the situation and asked him to give Harry a test.
The principal agreed and asked Harry a very simple question.
“What is three plus three?”
Harry immediately answered, “Six.”
“Excellent,” said the principal. “Now, what is five plus five?”
“Ten!”
The principal nodded.
Then he asked, “What is seven plus seven?”
Harry thought for a moment.
“Fourteen!”
The principal smiled.
“You certainly seem ready for the next grade.”
Harry stood up proudly.
Then the principal asked one final question.
“What is your name?”
Harry looked completely confused.
“Umm… I don’t know.”
The teacher laughed.
“Looks like we’ve found one subject that’s still appropriate for first grade!”
