A disciple deeply admired his teacher and believed that copying everything the teacher did would make him just as wise.
So he began observing him carefully.
Whenever the teacher sat down, the disciple sat down.
Whenever the teacher drank tea, the disciple drank tea.
Whenever the teacher walked, the disciple followed.
One day, the teacher noticed this and decided to teach him an important lesson.
He walked to a small pond and picked up a handful of mud.
The disciple immediately picked up some mud too.
The teacher smiled and dropped the mud into his mouth.
Without thinking, the disciple did the same.
The teacher immediately stopped him.
“Why did you do that?”
“You did it, Master!” the disciple replied.
The teacher laughed.
“My son, wisdom isn’t about copying everything I do.”
“Then how can I become wise?” asked the disciple.
The teacher pointed toward the pond.
“Observe, think, and understand the reason behind an action before you imitate it.”
The disciple nodded.
From that day forward, he stopped copying his teacher and started learning from him.
And that was when his real education finally began.
Moral: Don’t blindly imitate others. Learn to understand, think, and make your own wise decisions.
