The Three Contractors

Three contractors were invited to submit bids to repair a long wooden fence.

After inspecting the damage, the first contractor carefully measured everything.

“I can complete the job for $2,000,” he said. “That covers materials, labor, and a small profit.”

The second contractor checked the fence just as carefully.

“My estimate is $2,300,” he explained. “I’ll use premium materials that should last for many years.”

Finally, the third contractor walked around the fence, nodded once, and smiled.

“My price is $2,200.”

The official looked surprised.

“Can you explain your estimate?”

The contractor laughed.

“Of course.”

“I’ve learned that the lowest price isn’t always the best, and the highest price isn’t always necessary.”

“So what makes yours different?” the official asked.

The contractor replied,

“I believe in doing quality work at a fair price.”

“If my customers are happy, they’ll recommend me to others—and that’s worth more than saving a few dollars today.”

The official smiled.

“I like that answer.”

A few weeks later, the fence was repaired beautifully.

When neighbors admired the work, the official simply said,

“The best investment isn’t always the cheapest one.”

“It’s the one done with honesty, skill, and pride.”
