The Meter Race

Two gas company employees, a senior supervisor and a young trainee, spent the morning checking gas meters around a quiet neighborhood.

They parked their truck and began walking from house to house, recording meter readings and greeting friendly homeowners along the way.

After finishing the last house on the street, the supervisor smiled and said, “How about a little race back to the truck?”

The trainee laughed. “You’re on!”

As soon as they reached the sidewalk, both of them started running.

The supervisor was determined to prove that experience still mattered, while the trainee relied on youthful energy.

Halfway down the street, they heard footsteps behind them.

They turned around and saw an elderly woman jogging after them with a worried expression.

The two men stopped immediately.

The supervisor asked, “Ma’am, is everything alright?”

She caught her breath and smiled.

“Well,” she said, “when I looked out my window and saw two gas company workers running as fast as they could… I figured it would be a good idea to run too!”

For a moment, the street was completely silent.

Then all three of them burst into laughter.

The supervisor smiled and said, “Next time, we’ll walk back to the truck.”
