A man called the local library and asked,
“What time does the library open?”
The librarian checked the clock and replied politely,
“9 a.m.”
The man sighed.
“And what’s the idea of calling me at this hour?”
The librarian looked at the clock.
“It’s only 8 a.m.”
“I know,” the man replied. “I’m asking because I need to know when I can come in.”
The librarian smiled.
“You’re welcome to come at 9.”
The man paused.
“Can I come in earlier?”
“I’m afraid not. The library doesn’t open until 9.”
“Why not?”
“Because that’s our opening time.”
The man thought for a moment.
“Alright. I’ll call back at 9.”
The librarian laughed.
“Please don’t. Just come through the door.”
The man thanked her and hung up.
At exactly 9 a.m., the library doors opened.
And the first person standing outside was the same man.
The librarian smiled.
“You really didn’t need to call twice.”
The man replied,
“I just wanted to make sure you were serious!”
