A man applied for a job at a construction company.
The foreman looked over his application and smiled.
“Before we begin,” he said, “I’d like to ask you a simple question.”
The applicant nodded confidently.
“Without using any numbers, can you describe the number three?”
The man thought for a moment.
Then he smiled.
“Easy.”
“I’m the third child in my family.”
The foreman laughed.
“I said no numbers.”
The man grinned.
“Alright.”
He held up three fingers.
The foreman shook his head with a smile.
“Still using numbers.”
The applicant scratched his head.
Finally, he pointed to a three-legged stool nearby.
“It’s just like that stool,” he said. “Take away one leg, and it won’t stand properly.”
The foreman chuckled.
“That’s a creative answer.”
“So… did I pass?”
The foreman smiled.
“You certainly proved you can think outside the box.”
The applicant laughed.
“Sometimes that’s more useful than knowing all the right answers.”
The foreman nodded.
“Welcome to the team.”
