An elderly couple who were childhood sweethearts had married and settled down in their old neighborhood.
They were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and decided to return to the little park where they had first met.
They sat together on the same bench where they had spent so many afternoons as young lovers.
The husband smiled and said, “Do you remember the first time I told you I loved you?”
His wife smiled.
“Of course I do. You were so nervous that you could barely speak.”
“And you said yes.”
“I did.”
They held hands and watched the children playing nearby.
After a few minutes, the husband whispered, “If I had to do it all over again, I’d still choose you.”
The wife squeezed his hand.
“I’d choose you too.”
Then she noticed something in his pocket.
“What are you hiding?”
The husband pulled out a small box.
His wife gasped.
“After fifty years, you’re finally buying me a diamond?”
He opened the box.
Inside was a tiny key.
She looked confused.
“What is that?”
He smiled.
“It’s the key to our old house.”
She stared at him.
“But we sold that house twenty years ago!”
“I know,” he replied.
“Then what does the key open?”
The husband grinned.
“My heart.”
His wife rolled her eyes.
“After fifty years, you’re still using those terrible lines?”
He laughed.
“And you’re still listening to them.”
She smiled.
“Unfortunately, that’s true.”
They held hands and laughed together, just like they had fifty years earlier.
