Once, late at night, an Englishman came out of his room into the corridor of a hotel and asked the servant to bring him a glass of water.
The servant did as he was asked.
The Englishman re-entered his room, drank the water, and went back to bed.
A few minutes later, he heard a loud knock on his door.
He opened it and saw the servant standing there.
“Sir, I’m terribly sorry to disturb you,” the servant said, “but I forgot to ask you something.”
The Englishman looked annoyed.
“What is it?”
The servant pointed at the empty glass.
“Was the water cold enough?”
The Englishman sighed.
“Yes, it was perfectly cold.”
The servant nodded and walked away.
The Englishman closed the door and returned to bed.
A few minutes later, there was another knock.
He opened the door.
The servant was standing there again.
“Sir, I apologize once more.”
“What now?”
“I just remembered something.”
The Englishman stared at him.
“What?”
The servant smiled politely.
“Would you like another glass of water?”
The Englishman became furious.
“No! I don’t want another glass of water!”
The servant nodded and walked away.
The Englishman finally climbed into bed and pulled the blanket over his head.
Just as he was about to fall asleep, there was another knock.
He jumped out of bed and opened the door angrily.
“What is it this time?”
The servant stood there holding a glass.
“Sir, I brought you another glass of water.”
The Englishman stared at him.
“I told you I don’t want another glass!”
The servant looked confused.
“I know, sir.”
“Then why did you bring it?”
The servant smiled.
“Because you might need it to take your sleeping pill.”
