The soldier was annoyed and upset when his girlfriend wrote to him, breaking off their engagement and asking him to return her photograph.
He was furious.
He searched through his belongings until he found every photograph she had ever given him.
Then he gathered them all together and put them in an envelope.
He wrote a short note:
“Dear Sarah, I’m returning all your photographs as requested. Please keep the one I have circled.”
He mailed the envelope and forgot about it.
A few weeks later, he received a letter from her.
Inside was his note, along with a photograph.
On the back, she had written:
“Thank you. But I don’t remember giving you this one.”
The soldier smiled.
He had sent her a photograph of another girl.
Then he wrote back:
“Neither do I.”
And that was the end of their engagement.
