Yesterday, I had a flat tyre on the motorway while coming home from a trip to the city.
I carefully moved my car onto the hard shoulder, got out, and opened the boot.
I took out the spare tyre, jack, and tools.
As I was preparing to change the tyre, I noticed a man walking toward me.
“Need some help?” he asked.
I smiled.
“No, thanks. I’ve got it under control.”
He nodded and continued walking.
A few minutes later, I heard a loud noise.
The man had returned.
This time, he was carrying a large hammer.
“What’s that for?” I asked.
He pointed at my car.
“I thought you might need it.”
“I don’t think I’ll need a hammer to change a tyre.”
He smiled.
“You probably won’t.”
“Then why did you bring it?”
He looked at the flat tyre and said,
“Because my wife told me to make sure I didn’t come home without helping someone today.”
I laughed.
“That’s very kind of her.”
He nodded.
“She also told me to stay away from cars.”
“Why?”
He looked embarrassed.
“Last week, I tried to help someone change a tyre.”
“And?”
“I accidentally broke the jack.”
I looked at my jack.
He looked at me.
Then we both decided it was probably safer if I changed the tyre myself.
