It was the trainee’s very first day at a large company.
Wanting to impress everyone, he picked up the office phone and confidently called the kitchen.
“Please send me a cup of coffee right away!” he said.
A calm voice replied, “Do you know who you’re speaking to?”
The trainee answered, “No.”
“This is the company director.”
The trainee froze for a moment.
Then he quickly asked, “And do you know who I am?”
The director replied, “No.”
The trainee smiled with relief.
“Great! Then let’s keep it that way.”
He gently hung up the phone before the director could say another word.
A few minutes later, his supervisor walked over with a cup of coffee.
The trainee looked surprised.
“Who sent this?”
The supervisor smiled.
“The director.”
The trainee looked nervous.
“What did he say?”
The supervisor laughed.
“He said, ‘Everyone deserves a second chance on their first day.'”
The trainee smiled with relief and decided that from then on, he would always check who he was talking to before making a request.
