I hired a plumber to help me restore an old farmhouse

I hired a plumber to help restore an old farmhouse that had been sitting empty for years. He seemed experienced and confident, so I was glad to have him on the job.

Unfortunately, his first day couldn’t have gone much worse.

On the way to the farmhouse, he got a flat tire and lost nearly an hour. When he finally arrived, his electric drill suddenly stopped working. After struggling through the day with borrowed tools, he looked completely exhausted.

As if that wasn’t enough, when the workday ended, his old truck refused to start.

I drove him home in silence. He barely spoke during the ride and looked frustrated by everything that had happened.

When we arrived at his house, something unexpected happened.

Before entering, he paused beside a small tree near the front door. He gently touched the tips of several branches with both hands.

Then he opened the door and instantly transformed. He smiled warmly, hugged his children, and kissed his wife. It was as if the stress of the entire day had disappeared.

Curious, I asked him about the tree as he walked me back to my car.

He smiled and said, “That’s my trouble tree.”

I looked at him, puzzled.

“Every evening,” he explained, “I hang my problems on that tree before I go inside. My family doesn’t deserve to carry the weight of my bad day.”

He laughed and added, “The funny thing is, when I pick those troubles up the next morning, there are usually fewer of them than I remember.”

I never forgot that lesson.
