The Richest Gift

A journalist once asked a successful businessman, “What do you think makes a person truly rich?”

The businessman smiled before answering.

“Many people think wealth is measured only by money, but I don’t believe that’s true.”

The journalist leaned forward with curiosity.

“Then how do you measure it?”

The businessman shared a story.

“Years ago, I was rushing through a busy train station. I had forgotten my wallet and couldn’t buy a ticket.”

“As I stood there wondering what to do, a stranger noticed my situation.”

“Without asking for anything in return, he quietly paid for my ticket and wished me a safe journey.”

The journalist asked, “Did you ever repay him?”

“I tried,” the businessman replied. “Months later, I happened to meet him again. I thanked him and offered to return the money.”

“What did he say?”

“He smiled and said, ‘You don’t owe me anything. If you ever see someone else in need, help them instead.'”

The businessman paused for a moment.

“That simple act of kindness stayed with me for the rest of my life.”

“So,” the journalist asked, “was he richer than you?”

The businessman nodded.

“Yes.”

“He understood that true wealth isn’t only what you keep—it’s what you’re willing to give.”

The journalist smiled, realizing that generosity can leave a greater legacy than any fortune.
