The Final Test

A government agency was hiring for a very important position. After months of applications, interviews, and difficult exams, only two candidates remained.

To choose the final winner, the director decided to give them one last challenge.

The first candidate was invited into the office.

The director handed him a sealed envelope and said, “Inside is a simple task. Read the instructions carefully.”

The candidate opened the envelope.

It contained just one sentence:

“Do the right thing, even when no one is watching.”

He looked up, confused.

“That’s it?” he asked.

The director smiled.

“That’s it.”

The candidate thought for a moment before saying, “The right thing isn’t always the easiest choice, but it’s the one I would make.”

He handed the envelope back and left the room.

A few minutes later, the second candidate was called in and received the same envelope.

He read the message, smiled, and quietly placed it back on the desk.

“What would you do?” the director asked.

The candidate replied, “I’d remember that character matters more than talent. Skills can be taught, but honesty is a choice.”

The director nodded with approval.

After a brief discussion, one of the candidates was offered the job.

As he shook the director’s hand, he asked, “Was that really the final test?”

The director smiled.

“It wasn’t about finding the smartest person.”

“It was about finding someone people could trust.”
