Ingredients
Scale
- 4 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced 1/4-inch thick
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup apple cider or apple juice (optional)
Instructions
- Step 1: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add the apple slices and toss gently to coat evenly with the flour mixture.
- Step 2: Heat the melted butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the butter is hot and shimmering (but not browned), add the apple slices in a single layer, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Work in batches if necessary.
- Step 3: Cook the apples for 3-4 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and tender. Do not move them around too much while cooking to allow them to caramelize.
- Step 4: If using, add the apple cider or apple juice to the pan during the last minute of cooking. Allow the liquid to reduce slightly, creating a light syrup.
- Step 5: Remove the fried apples from the skillet and serve immediately. They are delicious on their own, with vanilla ice cream, or as a topping for pancakes or waffles.
Notes
- Store leftover fried apples in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; their crispness will diminish slightly.
- Reheat gently in a microwave or skillet to refresh them before serving, adding a touch of butter or apple juice for extra moisture.
- These fried apples make a delightful addition to your morning oatmeal, adding a sweet and spiced crunch.
- For extra flavor depth, consider adding a pinch of ground cardamom or allspice to the flour mixture.
