Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water (for simple syrup)
- 6–8 lemons, juiced (about 1 1/2 cups lemon juice)
- 4–5 cups cold water (for dilution)
- Lemon slices, for garnish
- Ice cubes
- Mint sprigs, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Step 1: Make a simple syrup by combining the sugar and 1 cup of water in a saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
- Step 2: Juice the lemons, removing any seeds. You should have about 1 1/2 cups of fresh lemon juice.
- Step 3: In a large pitcher, combine the cooled simple syrup, lemon juice, and 4 cups of cold water. Stir well to combine.
- Step 4: Taste and adjust the sweetness and tartness by adding more water or simple syrup, as needed. If it's too tart, add more simple syrup. If it's too sweet, add more water or lemon juice.
- Step 5: Fill glasses with ice and pour lemonade over the ice. Garnish with lemon slices and mint sprigs, if desired. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Store leftover lemonade in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; give it a good stir before serving as it may separate.
- This lemonade is best served cold, so skip the reheating and just add more ice if it's not cold enough.
- For a refreshing twist, try adding a handful of fresh berries (like strawberries or raspberries) to each glass before serving.
- The secret to the best lemonade is balancing the sweet and sour; start with less simple syrup and adjust to your taste!
